Dark Live Fest 4

Prague, slow but steady, is becoming a centre of widely understood industrial music promotion.
Aside from Prague Industrial Festival there is a smaller, yet very attractive event organized for the fourth time now, namely Dark Live Fest.
I had a pleasure of attending the previous edition whose line-up covered a.o: Displacer, S.K.E.T or Architect. In May I saw some bands I had already seen at Electroanschlag festival and the new ones : the Czech project mulpHia and P.A.L .

The event took place in the club Matrix; the beginning slipped for almost an hour, but soon after 8 Cervello Elettronico appeared on the stage. What you may expect from the artist is rather frugal scenic part and extremely rich sonic one. If you can think of the dance of lights and sounds closing a listener in a bit unreal, colourful circle loaded with energy – well then you have the idea of what the concerts of C E are like. A bit of exotic notes combined with prevailing electronic dynamics and highly dancy, moving melodies – that's how you may briefly sum the material David Christian offers his public : meditation, dance-floor madness – extremely rich variety that appeals freely and convincingly.
At the concert we had a chance to listen to some songs of „Negate The Instigator„

Setlist:
Intro - Electrophobia - Asphyxiate - Negate The Instigator - Stolen Memories - Emotion Sickness - Drop The Bomb - Rock Your Cage - (Encore)Plastic Face

Next, Christian Pallentin that is P.A.L started his concert. He's an artist experimenting with noise and ambient music since 1993 having his part in making music of Hybryds and Andxesion as well.
During the concert the sounds started a frenzy race just as my thoughts that tried to follow them... the whole made me think of sonic reflection of an uncanny mixture: manga cartoon, computer game, noisy street of a techno-country, tangle of samples of films and speeches, harsh, crashing cogwheels, rhythmically hitting pile drivers and quite an amount of catchy pieces. You could hear a mastery and skills in playing with sounds which though shocking and hard-hitting do not pull out a gentle thread that leads the listener through the complicated and overwhelming music labyrinth

After the concert had finished Christian seem to enjoy himself to the same extent as the rest of the audience... or even better :)

Setlist:
01 jobs 02 agitation 03 erosion 04 metrum 05 final solution 06 gelöbnis 07 i set my dog on fire 08 k-schwarz 09 death is a drum machine 10 t.a.e. 11 discipline 14 hours 13 i.r.k.

The next project, mulpHia from the Czech Republic, gave us a rather long performance. Before I heard that from the other members of the audience, the mind-link to Wumpscut came by on its own - rhythmic, neurotic tracks, paced similarly. Apart from that, a lot of 'theatricals', dynamics and interesting musical solutions.

Setlist:
01-intro 02-chaos 03-kill some people 04-endocrine 05-rotten 06-resist 07-other day 08-u-bot ranger
09-gloria, fuck maria (gloria FM) 10-fade 11-reverse reality 12-renassanation 13-liberator 14-the last

The last bands of the night were two solo projects from France - Twinkle and Sonic Area. The first was very dynamic, dedicated and showed a good deal of good humour (especially the closing "Twinkle Twinkle little star..."), while the second threaded the music around a single, repeating basic motif, very trancy and ear-catching, creating a structure that invited brooding and concentration. Both were unusually contrasted around energy and silence, becoming a great finale of the whole festival representing artists using sounds in individual ways and triggering totally varied reactions.

The end of the festival was calm and atmospheric. An afterparty followed, ran by DJ cAse. In conclusion, I have to admit that the concert was organized very well, the lighting and sound system were appropriate, creating the mood rather than destroying it. Only the turnout makes me think that the courageous promoters have a hard and long way to go...
