Elektroanschlag 9

How to understand the poetry of noise, to deafen oneself, to set every infinitesimal body cell into vibration, to delve into the variety of sounds that might be extorted from the machines ? How to survive in the noize cage, how to bewitch the machines to make them soften their metallic, hurting voices?
Well, go to Altenburg in April once and you'll know...

Yet another visit at Elektronaschlag (9th edition) convinced me firmly that it's the Fest one of a kind and very un-stressing one... even the journey to the venue through the green fields (and extremely narrow roads :-) set me in an almost holiday mood, not to mention the destination itself... great atmosphere, lots of familiar faces, smashing music and the feeling of complete relaxation.. that's more or less the feeling I took from Elektroanschlag, so no surprise going there is almost like vacation for me :)

This time I got to the Fest not earlier than on Saturday (for many nasty reasons I don't want to elaborate on here :-) straight for the concert of Contaminant.

Contaminant

Andre Sorge and Sebastian "Krabbe" Huettl (Config.SyS) have been active since 2002 , in 2005 they released the first (and so far the only) album "Sanity Report". Though Sebastian - as we learnt - did not show up, we had a chance to see Thomas Hein of Pflichtkauf playing instead of him. One way or another gents opened the fest wreathed in dense smoke and totally concentrated on their tools. Their music is a bit like a military blast mixed with a totally brilliant beat; like an extremely well structured music tissue moving forwards heavily, but incessantly. The leading motive seemed to drag the entire load of hard and pounding sounds behind, splattering some highly processed and caustic ones on the way.
Samples and musically tailored passages at times fell into the hypnotic trance, but the whole featured a rather rhythmical and emphatic character.
Scenically – no surprises – two jaunty lads and tons of equipment – all disappearing in the flood of lights and smoke.

Setlist:
The Way We Twitch
Rottenstill DeadAgain
Bulletproof Me (previously unreleased)
Impulse 101 (previously unreleased)
Drowning In Shallow Water (previously unreleased)

Chrysalide

Who would have expected white shirts and black ties on the Festival? I suppose this was a camouflage, very tricky one, indeed, but it was enough to look at their make-uped faces and listen to the sounds to be sure it's not a Sunday School that was practising up there...and even if it was they were drilling brutal Great (sonic) Awakening and not psalms.

Sylvain and his bro Arco, who started Chrysalide in 2006, definitely do not treat the listeners with kid gloves when onstage; they attack all senses with their poetry of scream and marvellous beat that either speeds up or slows down. The vocal resembles a scrap of two furious devils fighting brutally to the fervent accompaniment of the ninth circle of Dantean hell.

Two part singing, kneeling, wild insane mimicry, the entire visual part in general was vastly aggressive and it perfectly correlated with irregular, drilling passages.
Overdriven, intertwining or in turn – brawling - vocals either took the whole melody over or remained in the background of the rampacious, suddenly halting structure making unexpected turnabouts.
Slightly narcotic, a bit trancy and hypnotic... and at the end their version of „The Wall” ... true, their music education seems to be complete :-)

Tzolk'in

Tzolk'in is a project that emerged as a result of co-operation of Sal-Ocin (Empusae) and Gwenn Trémorin (Flint Glass). It bases on Maya mythology and calendar Tzolk'in. All set in ambient and industrial atmosphere.

What came up of the co-operation? Among others, the newest album „Haab” („solar calendar”) plenty of which we could listen to at EA 9 (the particular pieces are the names of the months).
Melancholy? Even if it was there, it was deeply hidden – in the majority of compositions the vibrating, hypodermic pulse propelled by exotic and slightly wild, exuberant elements prevailed. Drums, beats and sonic blasts enforcing sobering up were well-thought-out and harmonious.

The pieces that represented gentleness one may snatch from the machines or the note of gently sounding sadness were definitely and above all audible in „Uayeb” - it might have been for the reason that uayeb in Maya mythology meant unlucky period of additional days of a year - but also in „Kaban” or „Etzn'ab„. But even those mentioned featured the ubiquitous and highly overwhelming rhythm adding dynamism and lightness to the whole.
Tzolk'in presented a bit mystic, hypnotic flow of sounds and conjured up the images emanating with mystery and unusual, thoughtful trance.

Setlist:
01-Kumk'u
02-Etzn'ab
03-Uayeb
04-Kaban
05-Sotz
06-Chikchan

STIN SCATZOR

Stefan Bens and Kris Peeters are the masters of clangor, though in a more edible version cause their music has a tinge of electro. Shortly speaking the music they play destroys, but leaves room for evacuation in a more dynamic, or even dancy regions. In other words Stin Scatzor is a movement rather than transfixing and free, dynamic melody flow rather than edgy, sharp studded shell. The addition in a form of phat (even metal at times !) guitars make the whole sound highly vividly and energetically.
There was no feverish melodies there, but the music consequence and catchy sequences that invariably set the body into movement. Very good, well-prepared gig.
The recent release of the project is „Industruction” and of course we were presented a lot of pieces of it plus some of „Industrogression” and a brand new one piece „I Am Defect”.

Punch Inc.

The duo that recently released a great album „Fighclub” appeared on stage just afterwards.
Well, theoretically the first rule of Fight Club is „do not talk about the Fightclub”, but, what a hell - I'll break ranks :-).
A Bielefeld project, formed in August 2000 is Andreas Brinkert and Andreas Glöckner, who serve the sounds basing on samples, created with a use of lots of advanced IT and other such toys. The gents are also known of other projects: a. glöckner (aka moctan) - moriendi, asche, morgenstern and monokrom, while a. brinkert (aka bipol) - klang, womp and templegarden's. So as you see their experimental filed has been quite vast and they had a chance to get the experience and I assure you – the effects are strikingly good.

Punch Inc. are quite a dangerous machinery – but according to the expectations – their hits were as whipping as necessary. Multiplied, power-satiated and intensified cascades of piercing sounds fused with clamorous screams were like a big fat kick in a brain, a real sonic deathblow perfectly balancing irregularities with fine beat.

The title „Fighclub” seems to be chosen intentionally on many levels: during the performance the battle of lights and sounds blew the mind and the 'melodies' were like sonic reflection of other conflicts held either every day with external world or, on the contrary, within one's own (tired) head.

Claustrophobic cell, the impression of knife-sharp razorblades sounds attacking just like strobe lights, shuffling in an industrial welter could surely disturb the rout of thoughts not to mention the general impression. The entire concert: merciless melody (melody? or a big untamed neurotic cry of scream expressed by metallic rampant form?) plus aggressive lights flooding the hall assaulted all the senses in such a way I sometimes wanted to scream „ enough, it hurts”. But that was momentary – perverse or not – one listens to the end cause the melody gets the listener and keeps him/her/ in a tight grip – though on the way it breaks all the safety barriers the poor, ignorant spectator may set to protect himself.

Depending on the level of sensitivity (or indifference) one may say - Punch Inc. are: a raging tank, or : the sound imitating tearing of the metal linen – the effect achieved is the same: pain at the border of pleasure.
Not only for the masochists.

1. Taste This
2. Desert Storm
3. Roughneck
4. Dizzy Spell

THE [LAW-RAH] COLLECTIVE

With the project [law-rah] collective it's hard to give a straightforward opinion. Starting from the fact that the performance was a kinda “one-night-stand” :-) through the setlist, which actually included one long piece to the music presented which for me sounded like something eluding any classification whatsoever. Perhaps if we had a synaesthetic here, s/he would find appropriate words to describe the sonic variety and richness.

Bauke van der Wal and Dan of Loss created a soundscape bringing arising whirl, a theatrical spectacle, mysterious, unexplored corridor, foggy, lost streets, darkroom, but also gently distangling lace weave to mind – mostly thanks to fragility and elegance of the sound.

Soothing or disquieting sonic image, undoubtedly reflecting feelings, formed an individual, highly - as I sensed it – personal trans through emotional tints, concentrating or dispersing throughout the fragile tones. Frugal, balanced sounds shaped as cold crystal were, however, in power to move deep emotional layers .
Bauke van der Wal has been experimenting as [law-rah] collective since 2001 (it's when "incarnation" – his first CD - was out) creating the blends bordering analogue experiment, ambient and industrial. His recent albums is „as it is” - it was released by Spectre Records

Mimetic
Jerome Soudan, the M.A in musicology, has co-cooperated with such artists as Kasper T.Toeplitz, LES TETINES NOIRES, VON MAGNET or COLUMN ONE. In 1998 he formed MIMETIC. Since then he's co-operated with many other artists. Impressive, huh?
Just like the music material unwound by him during the concert with the visualizations by Pink Crash in the background.
The first that came to my mind was: it's the music like snowflakes: so diverse it's almost unique, shining in the daylight for a second and then disappearing, dissolving.
Deep, spatial matter either smashing with dynamism or passing gently to atmospheric picturesque tones . What the two juxtaposed had in common was extremely rich, satiated melody and the background spreading for the main beat. Exuberant, rhythmical or in turn calmly running tones stood for the multi-layered stained glass shining with colors – from the flashy ones to those darkened. Very diverse.
Setlist:
1. Virtual around me (part 1 - unreleased)
2. Virtual Around me (Invasion Wreck)
3. 10 angles (10 years spectre rds)

Aaron Spectre
He's been active since 2003 - he's not vegetarian, he's not rasta, and he doesn't make any use of chemical and/or natural turbo drives:)
Inspired by NIN, Dead Can Dance and Jungle music to mention just a few – he must have reached the intriguing results making use of such contradictions. And he did!
Starting from the variety of instruments used to the startling music compositions that were oscillating somewhere between gentle pop arrangements, soothing guitar pieces in a specific remix (like in modwheelmood or aarktica - arms remix ) to hypnotizing trance ones featuring definite rhythm (half silver). Surely it was something new (at least for me) breaking ranks of the EA 9 convention – I don't know if it was for a kinda fragility of the music or its general quality, but one thing's sure: Aaron Spectre presented the music I hadn't come across yet, so I won't elaborate on this before I learn more. Still, I could sense one thing: all the pieces had something in common: sensitivity and gentile operating with sounds creating intimate, almost closed-circle atmosphere. Intriguing – to check in the nearest future.
Setlist:
bedtime (unreleased)
half silver (ad noiseam)
aarktica - arms remix (darla)
degrees (ad noiseam)
lapsed remix (ad noiseam)
modwheelmood - going nowhere (aaron spectre remix) (things will change)
genghis tron - relief (aaron spectre remix) (forthcoming)

WINTERKÄLTE
WINTERKÄLTE closed the festival and definitely not in style to bring tears in our eyes: rather to dry them in case someone was defeated by the thought of upcoming 'end'.
The drum, the harsh beat, melodious, dynamic traces rhyhm'n'noise in style strengthened the falling. Hard-hitting, noisy and ideally working blend stood for a perfect finish of the fest. Bravo.
I know their music almost utterly from „Structures of Destruction” which I dare set off , say, once in a month (not to irritate the neighbors or last but not least my own labyrinth) and each and every time it's a sonic paralysis. I think it was similar in Altenburg though not THAT toxic – gents decided on dynamic ambush and not the torture techniques.

The sum the Festival up: just like I said, it's a bit like a melting pot, but a very tolerant one: the conditions are ideal to get new inspirations, to set your perspective in a different way and to get lost in a sea of new good sounds.
Next year there will be an anniversary edition. We're waiting!
