- The album 'Diametral' is available on your website for free... you mention your music is a hobby for you so you don't ask the fans to pay for it. In the times of hard debate on illegal downloading and the label companies closing down is a bit unusual attitude...ZIA: We don't have to earn money with our music. It is not worth the trouble having discussions and compromises until someone else thinks he can sell and earn money of it. Just as we told on our website, we do it for fun and not for stress, and we are pleased when the people tell us that they like it. We had fun creating it, and the listeners should have fun listening to it.
Illegal downloading is a big problem of course, especially for the small labels and musicians, but it is also some kind of homegrown. Music has become "fast food", it is available in large quantity and often low quality, it is quickly consumed and even quicker forgotten and around the corner the next snack is already waiting. It is no surprise that nobody is willing to pay the price of a fillet steak for a simple tasteless burger. - The album comprises of a wide spectrum of sound: cold industrial, those dancy and dynamic and very mysterious, atmospheric ones. What was the inspiration for the album?ZIA: We always try to cover a big range of moods in our albums, if we would always do the same stuff, it would become boring for us and our listeners. Our last album "Mutilate" was very dark and gloomy with violent samples. "Diametral" has been created with the intention to be different, hence the name "Diametral".
- When you make music, what's your main direction: originality, emotionality or dynamism? Or perhaps something else?ZIA: That's a good definition! In fact we want to achieve all of these. Our intention is to create unique compositions with an own personality, expressing and transferring emotions to the listener.
- "Diametral" doesn't feature lyrics (apart from samples). Don't you need words to strengthen the effect of the music?ZIA: No, it's exactly the opposite. The human senses are optimized for detecting other humans, both acoustically and visually. You always recognize a human voice within other noise or a face within a chaotic picture. A human voice draws too much attention onto itself and eclipses the rest, so in the end the voice is the only thing remembered although it is only one single part amongst many others. A voice rather weakens than strengthens the music. And, by the way, no one of us can really sing ;-)
- Do you think the artist should change constantly or rather stick to once chosen style? How is your opinion on this reflected on your albums?ZIA: Change is important, you never should stop learning, and the best way to learn is to practise. Experimenting with unusual instruments and sounds widens our own horizon and hopefully our listener's, too. All our albums have an own character and are the result of constantly trying to create something unique and not a copy of a copy of a copy....
- Is there something we, as listeners, should take into consideration while listening to the music of Zentriert ins Antlitz that you as its creators perceive as important?ZIA: Music should be fun and relaxation. To maximize these effects, you should consider to use high quality audio equipment and CD-Rs ;-)
- You don't play concerts live. Why? And what can we expect of Zentriert Ins Antlitz in the future?ZIA: Our music isn't very suitable for live performance, espacially because we have no vocals. Everything is done with computers, and three guys standing behind computers on a stage looks quite boring. It is more for the ears and the brain and less for the eyes and the feet. Of course there are some dancefloor tracks, but they are a minority and not intended to be performed live.
The next will be the E.M.I.T.R album we already promised. What you can expect in the future? Be prepared for everything!
