Wrocław ma obecnie niezwykle intensywny i bogaty czas jeśli chodzi o koncerty – w ostatnim czasie odwiedziły nas gwiazdy takie jak Peter Hook, Blixa Bargeld i Teho Teardo, Peter Murphy i David J świętujący 40-lecie Bauhaus, a w niedzielę 9 grudnia w Starej Piwnicy koncert zagrała formacja Legendary Pink Dots.

Zespól istnieje od 1980 roku, ma bogatą i różnorodną dyskografię – początki będące mieszanką elektronicznych, industrialowych i wave'owych brzmień z czasem wyewoluowały w kierunku psychodeli pozostawiając jednak nuty industrialne w swojej strukturze. Po zmianach w zespole ostateczny skład skupił się wokół wokalisty Edwarda Ka-Spel’a, odpowiedzialnego za klawisze Phila "The Silvermana" Knighta i gitarzysty Martijna De Kleer’a , który zastąpił zmarłego Boba Pistoora.

We Wrocławiu zespół zagrał koncert będący po części spektaklem, monologiem, a po części pokazem wirtuozerii w operowaniu instrumentarium – jeśli można w tym przypadku użyć tego słowa. Muzyka syntezatorów i gitary, ubogacona przez techniczne sztuki dodające tradycyjnym brzmieniom mocno industrialowego, kosmicznego brzmienia stanowiły doskonałe tło dla bardzo wyposzczonego scenicznie i wizualnie koncertu. Edward Ka-Spel zdominował scenę – powoli rozwijające się wokalne partie były nieco jak monodram, trochę jak kazanie, a sam wokalista – w czarnej szacie, na boso, śpiewający bądź recytujący w delikatnym punktowym świetle, zwracający się w bezpośrednim przekazie do słuchaczy był niczym kapłan czy szaman komunikujący się ze swoją publicznością, przekazujący tekst utworów jak poezję. Melorecytacja, śpiew, monolog – wszystkie te elementy stworzyły bardzo bogaty, wymagający skupienia obraz wizualno-dźwiękowy.

Muzyka Legendary Pink Dots jest wielowymiarowa, wymyka się łatwej klasyfikacji, zmienia swą formę i kształt w zależności od dobranych w danej chwili zestawów dźwiękowych i połączenia ich w całościowy utwór. Za sprawą lekkich zmian i modyfikacji, bądź w samej prezentacji, w jakości wokalu bądź dodatku i przearanżowaniu poszczególnych melodii czy fragmentów nabiera całkiem nowej jakości. Steruje emocjami słuchaczy w sposób niezwykły i bardzo intensywny. Całość jest hipnotyzującym, medytacyjnym pejzażem, lecz po chwili uderza ostrą, dynamiczną mieszanką – uwodzi, wycisza, wprowadza w trans, czaruje , zaś w kolejnych momentach pobudza i dodaje mocy. To trochę jak industrialna msza, uroczystość, a zarazem uczta w ramach technicznej wirtuozerii, pomysłowości i precyzji wykonania.

Tak jak wcześniej wspomniałam, koncert odbył się w dość wyposzczonej scenerii, oszczędnych światłach  i tylko punktowe smug i dym tworzyły atmosferę skupienia i uczestniczenia w niezwykłym wydarzeniu - zwłaszcza jeśli pomyśli się o niezwykłej charyzmie i scenicznej manierze frontmana.

Piękne doświadczenie przenoszące na chwilę słuchaczy w inny wymiar, w strefę wrażeń dźwiękowych, myśli, natchnień i niezwykle poetyckiej przestrzeni tekstowej tworzonej przez Legendary Pink Dots. To wydarzenie było trochę jak wieczór gdzie słowa i dźwięki zbudowały poetycki, bogaty i podniosły nastrój a muzyka i teksty biegnąc równorzędnie w pięknym splocie pokazały, że mistrzostwo wykonania bazujące na kanwie wspaniałych pomysłów tworzy niezapomniane wrażenia.

It’s extremely rich and intensive period for Wroclaw now when it comes to the concerts – in the past few weeks there were several top-notch bands visiting the city - Peter Hook, Blixa Bargeld and Teho Teardo, Peter Murphy and David J, who celebrated 40th anniversary of Bauhaus, and on Sunday 9th of December it was  Legendary Pink Dots, who played a fabulous gig in Stara Piwnica.

The band have been active since 1980, they have a rich and diversified discography: they started as an electronic, industrial and wave project to evolve towards psychedelia. Still, their sound still features some industrial tint in the very structure of their sonic matter. 

After several line-up changes, the band finally formed  in persons of the vocalist Edward Ka-Spel, the piano keyboard master Phil "The Silverman” Knight and the guitarist MartijnDe Kleer who took after Bob Pistoor.
What the band presented in Wroclaw was partly a spectacle, partly a monologue and partly a display of virtuosity in operating the instrumentation – if one can use the very word in their case.  Synthesizers and guitar music enriched and enhanced by techni tricks that added industrial, cosmic tint to the sonic matter stood for a perfect canvas for a scenically and visually minimal concert. 

Edward Ka-Spel dominated the stage – elaborately expanding vocalic parts were like a mono drama or preaching and the vocalist himself like a priest or shaman. He stood there in the centre of the stage, overed in dim light and smoke, barefoot, wearing a black gown, singing, chanting, reciting,  communicating with his audience, passing on his message, sharing his lyrics like poetry. Melorecitation, singing, monologuing – all the elements stood for a rich, attention demanding combination of visuals and sounds.

The music of Legendary Pink Dots is multidimensional, it escapes an easy classification.  Its protean quality employs rapid changes in form and shape depending on the set of chosen sounds and their combination into the final effect. Thanks to some slight changes - be it in presentation or vocalic or rearrangements of particular melodies or fragments - it gains a totally different quality. It steers the listener’s emotions in an exceptional and intensive way.  The whole stands for a hypnotizing, meditative soundscape that ocassionally hits with its hard, harsh and dynamic mixture – it seduces, allures, pacifies, but also energises and kicks the next moment. It’s a bit like an industrial mass, a festivity and a feast of technical mastery, imagination and performance precision.

Just like I mentioned before the concert was rather minimal when it comes to scenery or lights - only the spotlights and dense smoke enhanced the atmosphere of concentration and participation in an exceptional event - especially if you think of a charisma and scenic manner of the frontman.
Beautiful experience transitioning the listeners to a different dimension, into the sphere of sonic impressions, thoughts, inspirations and extremely poetic lyrics space created by Legendary Pink Dots. The event created a room for words and sounds to build a poetic, rich and profound atmosphere and the music and lyrics running in parallel proved the performance mastery that bases on canvas of exceptional ideas generates unforgettable memories.
